Relax and unwind on a beautiful three day cruise from the Thai border to Luang Prabang. Watch rural Laos pass by as you slowly head down the mighty Mekong, stopping at cute towns, hill tribe villages, and the intimate Kamu Lodge. Combining tranquility with local interaction, this cruise offers an idyllic introduction to Laos.

DAY 1: Houay Xay – Pakbeng (L/D)

Today you cruise downstream to the cute riverside town Pakbeng, stopping for a trip to a hill tribe settlement on route. Your shared boat cruise leaves in the morning so please arrive at the border crossing point by 08:00. A representative from Shompoo Cruise / Luang Say Cruises will greet you and escort you to the boat. Then you just need to sit back, relax, and watch the delights of rural Laos pass by; fishermen gracefully cast their nets, villagers stand and wave from the riverbank, and skilled boatmen paddle in their traditional wooden crafts.

Overnight at Luangsay Lodge, Pakbeng

DAY 2: Pakbeng – Kamu Lodge (B/L/D)

Spend the morning cruising to the tranquil Kamu Lodge, before enjoying a unique Lao experience in the afternoon.

As you continue downstream the Mekong maintains its scenic beauty. Mountains and cliffs rise and fall, rolling along the horizon and casting shadows into the river. Tiny villages dot the riverside, full of houses on stilts and squawking livestock. Your destination is Kamu Lodge and you’ll arrive in time for a sumptuous lunch. Nestled in the jungle, thus lodge is ecotourism at its best, and you’ll have a luxury en-suite tent that’s decorated with bamboo furniture. Immerse yourself in Lao culture this afternoon with a choice of four activities.

Either wander to the nearby villages and interact with the locals, or go out fishing on the Mekong, using traditional methods and barbecuing anything you catch. Others choices include gold panning and participating in rice planning and harvesting. Kamu Lodge is brilliantly secluded so you’ll continue to unwind into Laos’ inimitable rhythm.

Dinner and overnight at Kamu Lodge

DAY 3: KamuLodge – Pak Ou Caves – Luang Prabang (B/L)

It takes three hours by boat to reach Luang Prabang and you’ll have two stops on route before arriving in time for lunch. After breakfast at the lodge you’ll set off for the final leg of your slow boat journey. Stop first in Ban Baw, a quaint village where the locals drink a huge amount of LaoLao. That’s traditional rice wine and you’ll see how its processed. As the limestone cliffs get higher and more dramatic they start to hold secrets. Stop at the Pak Ou Caves, gorged into the rock and filled with thousands of gold covered Buddha statues.

The sheer quantity is mind-boggling, yet the attention to detail on these intricate sculptures makes it easy to stop and admire individuals. It’s understandably a very spiritual place. Luang Prabang is a further 2 hours downstream from Pak Ou. Lunch is then included at a local restaurant in Luang Prabang.
