Day 1: Hanoi Arrival
Arrive in Hanoi and transfer to your hotel for check in. The rest of day is at your leisure. Overnight in Hanoi.
Day 2: Hanoi (B)
After breakfast, visit the Temple of Literature. In 1076, Vietnam’s first university Quoc Tu Giam was established within a temple to educate Vietnam’s royalty, mandarins and members of the elite. The university functioned for an incredible 700 years and its gardens and well-preserved architecture offer a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s past. Next, visit The One Pillar Pagoda, one of Vietnam’s most iconic temples, the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, and the former Presidents house on stilts where he lived from 1958 to 1969. (viewed from outside; closed Mon and Fri and from Oct-Nov) Continue on to West Lake, the Tran Quoc Buddhist Pagoda and the Taoist temple of Quan Thanh dedicated to Tran Vu, one of the principal deities in Taoism. This afternoon, visit the Ethnology Museum (closed Mondays), a research centre and public museum exhibiting the ethnic groups of Vietnam. or, visit the Vietnam Women’s Museum (closed on Mondays) to learn about the traditions of births, weddings, motherhood, spirituality and more. Next, visit Hanoi’s Old Quarter, also known as the ‘36 streets’. Take a walking tour through Hang Be Market and around Hoan Kiem Lake. Visit some of the thousands of small businesses and shopkeepers. This evening, enjoy a Water Puppet show, a unique art form depicting scenes from rural life and national history. Overnight in Hanoi.
Day 3: Hanoi – Halong Bay (B, L, D)
Following breakfast leave Hanoi for a 3.5 hour drive to Halong Bay. Upon arrival at the Halong City jetty, board for an overnight cruise along Halong Bay. Enjoy lunch onboard. This afternoon, enjoy some visits and/or activities or spend some time relaxing on board. This evening, enjoy dinner and the spectacular scenery. Overnight on Halong Bay.
Day 4: Halong Bay – Hanoi – Danang – Hoi An (B)
This morning, enjoy breakfast as the vessels cruises back to port. Disembark and transfer to Haiphong for a flight onward to Danang International airport. On arrival in Danang transfer to Hoi An, a major Asian trading port in the 17th and 18th centuries. Time permitting, visit the Cham Museum in Danang en route. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. Overnight in Hoi An.
Day 5: Hoi An (B)
After breafast take a walking tour of the ancient town centre to visit the former merchants’ homes, the 400 year-old Japanese Covered Bridge and the colourful market. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight in Hoi An.
Day 6: Hoi An – Danang – Ho Chi Minh City (B)
After breakfast, transfer to Danang Airport for the short flight to Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to hotel. In the afternoon, choose to visit the War Remnants Museum, History Museum (closed Mondays) or the former Presidential Palace. You may also visit the major sights of colonial Ho Chi Minh City including the Old Saigon Post Office, Dong Khoi Street (formerly Rue Catinat), Continental Hotel, Opera House and City Hall (a vehicle will be available at all times). The evening is at your leisure. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 7: Ho Chi Minh City – Mekong Delta – Ho Chi Minh City (B, L)
This morning, embark upon a 2 hour drive to the delta town of Cai Be. Upon arrival, board a boat for a cruise to Cai Be floating market. Watch traders work the river and sell there produce which is hung on tall poles so as to be see from afar. After visiting the market continue to a cottage factory where pop-rice, rice paper and coconut candies are made. Return to the boat for the cruise to Dong Hoa Hiep Island to learn about daily life along the river. Enjoy a lunch of local Mekong specialties. Return to Ho Chi Minh City late afternoon. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City. .
Day 8: Ho Chi Minh City (B)
Today, depart for a half-day tour of Ho Chi Minh City, to Cholon, the Chinatown district and the Cantonese Thien Hau Pagoda, dedicated to the goddess of the Sea. Visit Vietnam’s traditional medicine museum, FITO Museum, to view a collection of 3,000 items relevant to the development of traditional Vietnamese medicine. Then, visit Ben Thanh Market to peruse the fresh produce and a variety of goods for sale. Transfer to Tan Son Nhat Airport for onward flight.
