Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi
Your first day will be your arrival into Hanoi where you will be met by your guide who will escort you to your hotel. Your first attraction to visit will be the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. This stunning structure is located in the middle of a lake surrounded by a beautiful garden which consist of Orange and Mango trees. We will then walk nearby to see the One-Pillar Pagoda. This was constructed in 1040 under King Ly Thai To. Next we will see the Temple of Literature which was constructed in 1070 built for Confucius as a temple to worship. Later it became the first university in Vietnam. Then we head over to to West Lake to see Tran Quoc one of the oldest Buddhist pagodas in Hanoi. We will also vist the Temple of Quan Thanh Toaist from the Ly Dynasty. In the afternoon you will have a choice to visit numerous attractions including the National Fine Arts Museum, you wil be given a choice of only one as we have limited time so discuss with your guide which one of the choices on offer appeals to you most. After visiting your choice your local guide will then join you through the “36 streets” of the old town, leading you into the heart of the Vietnamese people. This is an opportunity to take photos of Vietnamese people in their daily lives. Overnight in Hanoi.
Day 2: Hanoi (B, L)
On this day, after breakfast we will be joined by Daniel Hoyer, an American chef, teacher and author of five cookbooks who will take you through the streets of Hanoi and educate and show you the best street food and ingredients that Vietnam has to offer. He is the head of the gastronomic adventure tours in Latin America and Southeast Asia. We then head over to the French quarter where you will enjoy a local coffee called Ca phe or tea called Tra along with fresh pastries. Sit down with locals to enjoy this experience. Daniel along with a local guide will assist you to walk around and see the various food stall and markets and help you with any questions and if desire assist you in any purchases you would like to make. Take advantage of this opportunity to get out your camera and capture this lively atmosphere and its sights, colours and vibrancy. Lunch can be taken in the many street stalls or restaurants in Hanoi. Throughout this particular tour your guide and Daniel will assist you in your choices and will explain the various dishes that you see. The afternoon is at leisure.
A traditional Vietnamese water puppet show will be on offer of the evening. Traditional music will accompany stories that highlight Vietnamese belief and customs.
Day 3: Hanoi – Halong Bay (B, L, D)
Following breakfast we head over to the Halong Bay, a UNESCO heritage site, where we will view local life and also get to see the water buffaloes at work in the rice fields. Once here we will board the Junk (a local large boat) and welcome you to check-in. You will enjoy lunch on board as we go through beautiful waters and visit recently discovered enchanting caves. Choose to swim in the emerald waters or go kayaking. For those who want to relax and enjoy the sun you can stay on board the top deck. Following sunset, dinner will be served on board. Overnight on board.
Day 4: Halong Bay – Hanoi – Hue (B)
Today in the morning you will get the chance to enjoy a freshly brewed coffee. You will then return back to Halong. Along the way back you will be able to see the famous rock formations which resemble fighting roosters, dragons and even General de Gaulle’s nose. You will also be given breakfast on board before you leave your ship. You will return to Hanoi by car and along the way you will stop to see the But Thap Pagoda which was was commissioned in 1876 by King Tu Duc, then we will continue to Hanoi and transfer you to the airport for your flight to Hue. Once in Hue you will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Hue.
Notes: Please be aware that weather conditions and the choice of your boat will affect the activities and sights in Halong Bay.
Day 5: Hue (B)
Today you will visit a historical site from the Nguyen Dynasty which ruled from 1802-1945, the stunning Imperial Citadel. Following this you will take a cyclo through the “old town”. You will see the Thien Mu Pagoda, which was built in 1601. A 21-meter tower is the centerpiece of the pagoda. For the afternoon you will explore the mausoleum of Tu Duc, and then complete this day of historical monuments with a visit to Khai Dinh’s famous Tomb, which is very unique from the other tombs in Hue. Overnight in Hue.
Day 6: Hue – Danang – Hoi An (B)
Today after breakfast we will drive south along “Cloud Pass”, one of the most beautiful drives in the world with stunning views of the beautiful beaches and mountains. This is a highlight of the tour with altitudes of up to 496m and views of the stunning coastline and up to 1,000m high mountains that forms the meteorological divide in Central Vietnam, you will be truly amazed! Along our Journey we stop to see the famous Marble Mountains before we arrive into Hoi An. In the 17th and 18th centuries Hoi An was an important trading port and you will see that it still preserves it stunning architecture along with easy going lifestyle. You will be taken on a tour of the ancient city centre and explore a number of ancient Chinese tea houses and temples. See the French influenced villas from the colonial period, the colorful markets and the 400 year old Japanese Covered Bridge. Overnight in Hoi An.
Day 7: Hoi An – Danang – Nha Trang (B)
On this day you will fly from Danang to Nha Trang, a small town on the southern coast of Vietnam. Nha Trang is famous for its beautiful beaches and clear blue waters. You will be given a tour of the city where you will see the historical sites from the Cham era. This will include the holy Po Naga tower which was built in the 7th century. You will also see the stone church from the French colonial period and the Long Son Pagoda, a Buddhist pagoda, built to honor of the monks and nuns killed in conflict with the Diem government. To complete your tour you will visit a small manufacturing company where intricate handmade embroidery is made. Overnight in Nha Trang.
Day 8: Nha Trang (B, L)
Following breakfast catch a boat trip to the nearby islands and take this opportunity to swim, snorkel or just simply relax on the boat. On this boat trip, you have the opportunity to visit the local people and observe their way of life and see the farmers at work. Here you will be given lunch consisting of local delicious fish and shellfish. After we head back to Nha Trang where the afternoon is spent at your leisure. Overnight in Nha Trang.
Day 9: Nha Trang – Phang Rang – Dalat (B)
Once you have had breakfast we will head to Dalat. This journey will take us along the coast where we will pass salt mines and stunning green rice fields. See the picture perfect postcard view of the higlands of central Vietnam and the lush vegetation. Depending on the season you will see grapes, tobacco, rice, coffee, tea and vegetables being grown. Overnight in Dalat.
Day 10: Dalat – Ho Chi Minh City (B)
This morning we will take you to visit the residence of the last Emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai. This Art Deco influenced magnificent structure is one of the most popular tourists attracttions in the country, you only have to visit it to see why. From here we continue our journey to visit a former railway station and gaze at its unique architecture. There is an option to ride on the old steam train. You will also be given the opportunity to visit the Xuan Huong Lake and and the Lam Ty Ni Pagoda. Also see the abstract paintings and poems of a famous living Monk, well known outside of Dalat. The day ends with a visit to the central market, known for its fresh vegetables and fruits. At the end of this day you will be transferred to the airport for flight to Ho Chi Minh. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 11: Ho Chi Minh City (B)
Today the tour will start with a visit to Chinatown in Ho Chi Minh. The Chinese first came to Vietnam centuries ago and establised themselves well and truly here as you will see. There are a variety of markets and plenty of small shops. The Thien Hau Pagoda is located here which is dedicated to the goddess of the sea. We then travel to the first traditional medicine museum in Vietnam the FITO Museum. Here is displayed an stunning array of 3,000 elements some of which date back to the Stone Age. You will be shown an insight into ancient vietnam within this interactive museum, this place will educate you about the history of Oriental medicines. The afternoon will consist of an extensive cultural and historical tour. This will include the historic center, Dong Khoi Street and the main shopping street which is located in the heart of colonial Ho Chi Minh. The City Hall, the former Hotel de Ville, the old opera house will also be visited. We will also visit of the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office and the Ben Thanh market. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 12: Ho Chi Minh City – Cai Be – Vinh Long – Can Tho (B, L, D)
After breakfast on this morning we will travel by road to Cai Be where we will board the the ship, Bassac. The crew will be waiting to welcome you on board with a welcome drink. As we travel along the Tien Giang river lunch will be taken on the upper deck. As you rest and relax aboard the Bassac there will be a bar where you can enjoy drinks. We take you through the Cho Lach canal to visit a village on the edge of the Mang Thit River. See how the locals live and work and enjoy their hospitality. Take a walk amongst rice fields and orchids. You will be served dinner by the crew while the Bassac travels on the Mang Thit river into the sunset. The Bassac will dock next to the Phuoc Hu pagoda in Tra On. Overnight on board.
Day 13: Can Tho – Chau Doc (B)
At 06:30 Breakfast is served as we travel to visit the floating market of Cai Rang. Once here you will leave the ship to visit to the floating market on a small boat and also see the surrounding “Arroyos” and gardens before returning to the Ninh Kieu pier. From here we head back to Ho Chi Minh and then towards the northwest to Chau Doc towards the Cambodian border. Once in Chau Doc we will transfer you to your hotel. For the afternoon we take you to Sam Mountain and watch the beautiful sunset over the Cambodian. Overnight in Chau Doc.
Day 14: Chau Doc – Ho Chi Minh City – Departure (B)
On this morning we shall take a tour of the local market at the confluence of three rivers, walking through the hustle and bustle where from here you will take a boat to Chau Giang district. Here you will see a mosque of the local Cham. The Cham are of Malay origin which dominated the area between the 2nd and the 9th century along with the entire coastal region of Vietnam. Nowadays the Cham are renowned for silk weaving. You will be given the opportunity to see them at work. Next we will visit a stunning Khmer temple and also catfish farms which have become an integral part of the local ecomony. This concludes our tour whereby you will be taken back to Ho Chi Minh to be transferred to the airport for your return flight.
