You can even add spice to your adventure with a number of really exciting tour options that will leave you in awe.

Day 1: Siem Reap Arrival (D)

Once you set foot on Cambodian soil, you will be greeted by a friendly English-speaking local guide who will travel with you to your hotel to check in. You can take some time to relax and stretch after your long flight as your 17-kilometer bike tour will begin in the afternoon.

Your adventure on bike will take you to the Cambodian countryside where you will have a chance to experience its rural appeal. The dusty back roads will carry you to a mix of greenery, lively villages, amazing houses on stilts, and ancient hidden temples. An Asian-style transport, the tuk tuk, with bike rack will accompany you in your tour.

Pedal your way past Chreay Village to Tonlé Sap Lake. Enjoy a flash of colors as you travel down fertile red dirt splashed with touch of sparkling green flora. Your sense of smell will be tingled by sweet whiffs of lotus blossoms growing abundantly in Buddhist shrines. Catch your breath in the shady ancient temple of Wat Athvea. Spend some time to discover what this temple has to offer. After a brief respite, get back to the saddle en route to a hammock bar with great view of the rice fields for some light refreshment. Take a deep breath as your next stop will be Phnom Krom Hill.

You continue your bicycle ride to the rarely-visited Phnom Krom Hill. On top of the hill is a temple where you can take pleasure in the sight of the whole Tonle Sap Lake and the setting sun. Travel your way back to Siem Reap as the sun sets in the horizon.

Dinner will be at The Sugar Palm where you will enjoy your first authentic Khmer cuisine in a traditional house with pleasing interior.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 2: Angkor Hike (B|L|D)

After breakfast, you will take a short ride to your 10-kilometer temple-hopping adventure. You will do your exploration the old way—by foot. Walking is the best way to experience the beauty of the different structures of Angkor. You can take a glance at small temples hidden in the dense jungles. You will be enthralled with ancient towers staring you down from above, and you will hardly miss a number of physical reminders from the past along the way.

First stop is the world-renown Angkor Wat, the flagship of the ancient Khmer empire. This Cambodian historical landmark was constructed over a period of 30 years during the time of King Suryavarman II in the 12th century. Its design was patterned from Mount Meru which was considered as the home of the gods. The walls of the structure are adorned with bas-reliefs and stone carvings portraying the war exploits of the king and different stories of the Hindu mythology. If that isn’t lavish enough, get enthralled with 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the walls of the temple. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of Cambodia’s national flag symbolizing the essence of the Khmers.

Rest your weary foot a bit and partake of a simple meal served at a local restaurant. After a brief respite, you will tread back to the forest going to Angkor Thom. It is the last known capital of the Great Cambodian Empire under the rule of Jayavarman VII. This ancient city is enveloped by eight-meter high walls and is situated in a perfect-square compound.

Take a breather among the many sugar palms beautifying the site. Enjoy the water scenery of the moat surrounding the structure before you find your way to the South Gate. This amazing structure is adorned by four giant faces and elephant carvings. The entrance path is lined with 54 images of demigods holding aloft the holy snake Naga.

Through the thick jungle canopy, follow the sand trail going to Bayon Temple where you will be amazed by the grandeur of this 12th century structure. The temple is popular for its 54 towers, each one depicting mysterious face and is believed to be a symbol of each province of the Empire. Find your way to the Terrace of the Leper King and Terrace of the Elephants whose elaborate bas-relief are simply mesmerizing.

Travel back to your hotel and rest as you wait for dinner to be served at Champey Restaurant near Pub Street. Enjoy the rest of the night at your leisure and have a good night rest at Siem Reap.

Day 3: Siem Reap to Phnom Kulen to Beng Mealea and Back to Siem Reap (B,L,D)

Enjoy your breakfast as this day will be a challenging 15-kilometer bike ride and 35-kilometer trek. You will first take a drive through the rice fields, greeting friendly local inhabitants along the way. Your destination is Phnom Kulen, a majestic sandstone plateau protruding in the wide flat landscape.

Phnom Kulen is a sacred Khmer place where thousands of pilgrims visit every weekend. The Khmer empire is believed to have originated from this place. Your journey to the top will be made more exciting with stone carvings in riverbed and a trek to Pagodas hidden from plain view, plus an oddity of a reclining Buddha believed to have been from the 16th century. You can take a refreshing dip in the river while you enjoy the view of waterfalls.

From this site, you will traverse the pristine jungle eastward to Svay Leu Pagoda. You might even get the chance to come face-to-face with some wildlife and get to know the local lychee. Treat yourself as well to a taste of the local life in the robust market in the area.

The next stage of your day’s tour is a bike ride to Beng Mealea. You will pedal southwards through seldomly-used roads to one of Cambodia’s recently opened ancient structure. Beng Mealea has been hidden for centuries by thick jungle outgrowth. It remains practically the same since it was discovered. You will be allowed to traverse through it and explore beyond the jungle ruins. Lunch will be served at this location.

Drive back to Siem Reap later in the afternoon and freshen up yourself in time for a sumptuous dinner at the contemporary Nest Angkor Restaurant.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 4: Siem Reap to Banteay Srei to Wat Tabeng (B,L,D)

On towards more adventure this day with a 55-kilometer cycling tour through back roads and local communities on your way to Bantay Srei. Immerse briefly to the life in a rural setting as you interact through your guide with the inhabitants of the villages. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn about rice paper production and sample some palm wine and palm sugar if they are available.

Along the route is the Landmine Museum founded by Mr. Aki Ra. This museum takes people back to Cambodia’s lowest moment under the Khmer Rouge. Mr. Ra was once was a child soldier of the Khmer Rouge. Today, he promotes mine awareness through the museum and works as a de-miner. The museum is also a safe refuge for landmine-amputated children who were rescued by Aki Ra from the streets of Phnom Penh or underprivileged rural villages.

Your destination for this leg of the tour is “Citadel of the Women” temple of Banteay Srei. Best considered as the treasure of the Angkor region, Banteay Srei is this most preserved Khmer architecture where you will find astounding bas-reliefs and details of classical Cambodian art. The structure itself is really unique as it is the only temple in the Angkor area made of pink sandstone. Before you go meandering, take a break and enjoy your picnic lunch set in the relaxing ambience of Bantay Srei Pagoda.

From Banteay Srei, take another 18-kilometer bike ride to Wat Tabeng. Seated in an expansive rice field, this village is considered as one of the most picturesque site in the whole of Cambodia. You will settle for the night on pagoda grounds. An adventure-style tent camp is set up for you to experience nature at its finest.

With your guide, meet the residents and explore the village and the surrounding area. A Khmer barbeque dinner awaits you upon your return to the camp. Enjoy your dinner in a classy sitting area along with your fellow travelers.

Overnight in Wat Tabeng.

Day 5: Wat Tabeng to Phnom Bok to Kampong Pluk and Back to Siem Reap (B,L,D)

Wake up before the sun rises and observe the monks of Wat Tabeng carry out their morning prayers. You can even personally meet them after the rituals. Enjoy your breakfast afterwards and prepare yourself for another 5-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer trek.

Pedal your way across the village towards Phnom Bok Hill. Take a short trek to the summit and take pleasure in the magnificence of the low-lying land surrounding the hill. From there, get your feet busy again to trek the downward slope going to Banteay Samre temple where your energizing lunch awaits you.

Right after lunch, rest your weary legs as you take a 35-kilometer jeep ride to Tonlé Sap Lake. This lake is considered as the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Its coverage depends on the season. During the wet season, it can grow to more than four times its size in the dry season. You will see its impact on the lives of the people living in this area when you take your boat ride to Kampong Phluck. This village is home to many people living in stilted houses. You will also witness life on the water with floating houses and flooded forests that you will see along the way.

The boat trip leg of this travel is possible only from June to March of the following year. Should your tour happen before these months, you can choose the alternate Kampong Phluck overland visit where you will experience walking on stilted houses.

Return back to Siem Reap where your dinner will be served at the relaxing ambience of the comfortable and stylish Viroth’s Restaurant.

Overnight in Siem Reap.
