You will also have a chance to enjoy a day in sand and water at Shampoo Island while the rest of the tour will take you to popular ancient and colonial landmarks. Itinerary

Day 1: Yangon – Mawlamyine

After an early breakfast, you will begin a scenic 7 hour journey by car to Mawlamyine, the capital of the Mon State. Located on the Gulf of Mottama, it is Myanmar’s third largest city. Along the way, you will stop in Bago and witness the Shwethalyaung Buddha. This reclining Buddha is one of the largest in the world, at 55 m long and 16 m high.

Resume your journey, stopping in Kyaikhto for lunch at a local restaurant (own account).  After lunch, continue to Mawlamyine. Upon arrival,check in to your hotel. This evening, stroll along Strand Road where colonial buildings overlook the river and dine at a local restaurant.

Overnight in Mawlamein.

 Day 2: Mawlamyine – Excursion to Shampoo and Bilu Islands     ( B, –  , – )  

After an early breakfast, set off for a full day of excursions on the water. Take a short boat ride to Ta Kaw Pon Za Lai, Shampoo Island. The island sits at the confluence of five rivers and is where the Mon Kings held ritualistic shampooing ceremonies during the local water festival, Thingyan. Spend time here exploring the monastery, nunnery and pagoda. Next, continue to Bilu Kyun, known as Ta Kaw Sa Man in Mon, which means ‘Orge Island’.

You will tour 2-3 villages by horsecart to experience local life and culture. You may also observe the making of traditional handicrafts such as pipes, small toys, walking sticks and chalkboards. At midday, stop for lunch at a local restaurant (own account) on the island before continuing with your visit of the villages.Then transfer to the jetty and back by ferry to Mawlamyine. Upon arrival in Mawlamyine, transfer to the hotel.

 Day 3: Mawlamyine ( B, – , – )

After breakfast, visit to the bustling central market, Zeigyi. Shop dozens of stalls with local vendors buying and selling their wares. Stroll along the downtown streets, stopping to visit the colonial buildings, mosque and popular landmarks of the city. Visit the beautiful Holy Family Cathedral built during the colonial era and Judson’s Church, built in 1827 by Dr. Judson who translated the Bible into Burmese.

Enjoy the lunch at a local restaurant (Own Account) and take a break from the heat in your hotel. After lunch, visit Kyaik Thanlan Pagoda. Built in 875 AD, the 40 meter high stupa is located on a hill surrounded by 34 smaller Zediyan pagodas. It houses the Tripitaka Buddhist manuscripts and a hair relic from the Buddha. This is also thought to be the site where Rudyard Kipling penned the famous poem, Mandalay.

Next you will visit the ancient Queen Sein Don Monastery or Yada Bonmyint Monastery. This Monastery is more as 100 years old and is most noted for its intricate woodcarving and Burmese crafts. As today draws to a close, proceed to U Zina Pagoda to enjoy the beautiful sunset.

Day 4: Mawlamyine  – Hpa An ( B, – , – )

After an early breakfast, begin your scenic drive to Hpa An. Your first stop will be a the Kha Yon Cave. Locals worship among the stalagmites and stalactites in the cave asking for prosperity and good health. The cave is also home to many Buddha statues.

Continue to Kadoe Kawnat village where you will visit Kawnat Monastery. Built over a century ago by a villager named U Nar Ouat well known for his wealth and generosity, this stunning monastery features intricate woodcarving. Upon arrival at Hpa An, you will visit Kyauk Kalat Pagoda and then proceed to the base of Mt. Zwe Kabin. This sacred mountain has several thousand identical Buddha statues along its base. Take a short walk to the waterfalls where you will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (own account).

After lunch, continue your tour with a visit to Kaw Gun Cave also known as the ‘Cave of the Ten Thousand Buddhas’. As you walk through the cave, you will see more than 2000 votive tablets of Lord Buddha and Mon inscriptions. This afternoon, check-in to your Hpa An hotel and take a stroll through this charming town.

Day 5: Hpa An – Yangon – Departure ( B, – , – )

Transfer to the local jetty this morning for a one hour cruise on the Than Lwin River. You will cruise to the Dhamma Vizaya Pagoda and a hill locally known as Linnoh Gu (Bat Cave). Stop to visit the pagoda and the area around the cave, enjoying the peaceful setting and beautiful surroundings. Return to the jetty and continue by road back to Yangon. Stop along the way for lunch at a local restaurant near Zoke Thoke Village (own account). Transfer to Yangon Airport.
