Itinerary

Day 1: Siem Reap Arrival to Angkor Complex (L,D)

An English-speaking local guide will welcome you on your morning arrival in Siem Reap and will come along to assist you  checking in at your hotel. Take some time to relax and unwind from your trip to Cambodia. Your tour will start with a bike and tuk-tuk ride to the world-renowned Angkor Wat, the flagship of the ancient Khmer empire. This Cambodian historical landmark was constructed over a period of 30 years during the time of King Suryayarman II in the 12th century. Its design was patterned from Mount Meru which was considered as the home of the gods. The walls of the structures are adorned with bas-reliefs and stone carvings portraying the war exploits of the king and different stories of the Hindu mythology. If that isn’t lavish enough, get enthralled with 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the walls of the temple. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of Cambodia’s national flag symbolizing the essence of the Khmers. After your lunch break, you will travel to Angkor Thom, you will visit the last known capital of the Great Cambodian Empire under the rule of Jayavarman VII. This ancient city is enveloped by eight-meter high walls and is situated in a perfect-square compound. You will start your exploration through the South Gate adorned by four giant faces and elephant carvings. The entrance path is lined with 54 images of demigods holding aloft the holy snake Naga.

Next stop is the heart of the city, Bayon Temple where you will be amazed by the grandeur of the structures. This temple is popular for its 54 towers, each one depicting mysterious faces and is believed to be a symbol of each province of the Empire. Find your way to the Terrace of the Leper King and Terrace of the Elephants whose elaborate bas-reliefs are simply attention-grabbing.

Going through the back roads en route to Ta Prohm temple. This ancient structure was erected from the 12th to the 13th century. After it was abandoned, it was covered by vines and jungles and most sections of the temple crumbled to the ground. Part of its appeal today is the fact that most of it is still covered with dense vegetation, pretty similar to when it was first rediscovered.

Late in the afternoon, you will enjoy a boat ride, Cambodian style. Waiting for you at the South Gate of Angkor Thom is an Angkor Gondola adorned with traditional Khmer design. It will take you to a sunset cruise along the ancient Khmer waterways called baray. The boat tour will be mixed with a quick stop to a small cave and a bit of walking to the top of Prasat Chrung, a historical landmark where you can enjoy the view of the sunset as you chill out before heading back to your boat and back to Siem Reap. Enjoy a sumptuous Khmer dinner at Viroth Restaurant surrounded by a serene garden.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 2: Siem Reap to Project Work (B,L,D)

This is your day to immerse yourself to the Cambodia rural way of life. After breakfast, an orientation will be conducted to brief you about the events of the day.

The first activity is a ride to the village of Kompheim where you will personally witness Khmer countryside life amidst rice fields, cow herds, and people and animals at work. You will be greeted by a rush of smiling children welcoming your presence. This is the right time to snap those cameras and capture each moment.

Once you set foot on the village soil, your adoptive family will greet you along with the horde of curious villagers. You will be fully briefed about safety precautions before your “rural” life starts. Depending on the season, you may be tasked to plant or transplant rice, harvest, or learn the art of thatch roof making. You will be served a tasty Cambodian lunch and throughout the day, you will have water, fruits, and snacks to energize you.

Travel back to your hotel late in the afternoon and relax before a sumptuous dinner at the airy Sugar Palm Restaurant, situated away from the hustle and bustle of Siem Reap.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 3: Siem Reap to Kulen Mountain to Beng Mealea (B,L,D)

Enjoy your breakfast as this day will begin with a drive through the rice fields, greeting friendly local inhabitants along the way. Your destination is Phnom Kulen, a majestic sandstone plateau protruding in the wide flat landscape.

Phnom Kulen is a sacred Khmer place where thousands of pilgrims visit every weekend. The Khmer empire is believed to have originated from this place. Your journey to the top will be made more exciting with stone carvings in a riverbed and a trek to Pagodas hidden from plain view. Lunch will be served when you reach the summit. You can take a refreshing dip in the river while you enjoy the view of the waterfalls. On your way down, you will see a spectacular view of the surrounding area.

The next stage of your day’s tour is Beng Mealea. You will travel down a seldomly-used road to one of Cambodia’s recently opened ancient structure. Beng Mealea has been hidden for centuries by thick jungle outgrowth. It remains practically the same since it was discovered. You will be allowed to traverse through it and explore beyond the jungle ruins.

Back at Siem Reap after your 8-kilometer trek, you will take pleasure in a delectable dinner at Champey Restaurant.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 4: Tonle Sap Lake and Siem Reap Departure (B,L)

Explore the stunning Tonle Sap Lake right after your breakfast at your hotel. It is considered as Southeast Asia’s largest inland freshwater lake with its size varying from one season to another. During the dry season, it covers an area of about 2,500 square kilometers; its size quadruples to about 10,000 square kilometers during the wet season.

You will journey further to Kampong Phluck, an area thriving with authentic Cambodian fisherman’s life. This island is not an often-frequented tourist destination, but it displays marvelous views of mangrove forest, houses on stilts, and a glimpse of the day-to-day lives of inhabitants.

A feast of Khmer dishes will be served at the relaxing garden ambience of Madame Butterfly in Siem Reap. After a brief period of respite, you will be transported to the airport for your departure flight.
