Itinerary

Day 1. Na Meo border – Vieng Xai

Your guide and private car will meet you at the Laos Vietnam border. From here you will be driven three hours to Viengxay, Overnight in Viengxay.

Day 2: Viengxay – Sam Neua (B,L)

Spend the morning exploring Viengxay, an often forgotten town that played an important role in the Vietnam war.

Laos’ role in the war is rarely spoken about, even though the country was almost decimated by the battle that raged on both sides of the border.

A hidden city was built in Viengxay, carefully nestled inside the limestone peaks and home to more than 20,000 people trying to escape the daily US bombing raids. Schools, hospitals, markets, radio stations; there’s a remarkable resilience that shines through as you discover how everything was built inside the caves. Providing the haunting yet powerful narrative is an audio tour created with interviews from locals who lived through the experience. And while the poignant history lesson is very powerful, there’s also a composed beauty to the landscapes you’re exploring.

After lunch in a local restaurant you will drive for around an hour to the town of Sam Neua. While much of Laos is becoming popular for tourists, this province and the town of Sam Neua offers a real off the beaten track experience and it’s not short on sights. Wander along the promenade and then marvel at the 1565 Buddha statue in Wat Phoxaysanalam, a relic that reminds everyone of the country’s rich history. Shouts and bargaining fill a local market, the sounds floating across the stunning collection of local textiles and vibrant fabrics. Explore this captivating place and find a whole section of woven bamboo and traditional foods and animals. Before the market you’ll visit a weaving house and see traditional cotton and silk textiles being made.

Overnight in Sam Neua

Day 3. Sam Neua – Ban Son Koua – Night Safari in Nam Et National Park

After an early morning breakfast, we leave Sam Neua (at 7am) for the 3 hour drive to the village of Ban Son Koua. Here we board a long tail boat and cruise for 1 1⁄2 hours on the Nam Nern River to the park headquarters where you will enjoy a lunch prepared by the villagers, and learn about conservation and management from the park staff.

At mid afternoon we depart for the night safari, stopping along the way at a salt lick, where your local guide, a skilled hunter and tracker, identifies animal tracks. After sunset, relax around a campfire, enjoy a BBQ dinner. A couple of hours after dark we float down the river quietly while your local guide looks for wildlife by torchlight. Approximately 2 hours later we arrive back at the park headquarters. Your accommodation for the night is in traditional Lao style huts in the forest.

Overnight in Nam Et National Park

Day 4. Night Safari in Nam Et National Park (day2) – Nong Khiaw

Before breakfast we rise early to explore the jungle where local guides will teach you about medicinal plants and explain the history of the area. After breakfast we take the boat back to Ban Son Koua, making a stop at a prime spot for bird watching. We continue by road to Vieng Thong, then onto Nong Khiaw, arriving there around sunset.

Day 5. Nong Khiaw – Nam Ou River Cruise and villages

After breakfast we board a local boat upstream on the Nam Ou River. This stretch of the river offers beautiful scenery and we make a stop at 2 minority villages en route (Ban Sop Khing and Ban Sop Jaem), that are only accessible by boat. We make a stop in the fishing village of Muang Ngoi for lunch and a walk around before arriving back in Nong Khiaw by late afternoon where the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 6: Nong Khiaw – Pak Ou Caves -Luang Prabang (B,L)

After breakfast you’ll travel down the Nam Ou River by boat, making your way to Luang Prabang and cruising past numerous riverside residents and villages. It’s an all day journey, but one that’s full of both excitement and wonder.

Watch the local fishermen as they go about their work, evocatively casting nets and shouting about success along the riverbank. Women and children wash their colorful clothes in the river, and in the dry season when the river level is low, they’ll be wading in the water and waving you on your way. Enjoy a picnic lunch on route, and marvel at the stunning scenery of northern Laos, the limestone mountains covered in greenery and shaping like a dragon’s tail along the river.

After four hours you’ve reached the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, opening in a limestone cliff that reveal thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues. Inspect the tiny ones, minuscule offerings that are barely bigger than your foot. Then stand face to face with the big ones, two meters high and always offering a peaceful expression. Feel the encompassing spirituality and keep discovering more statues before you continue downstream for another two hours.

You’ll arrive in Luang Prabang at a perfect time, the sky beginning to start a long drawn out sunset, and the spiritual capital of Laos looking even more soothing in the soft evening light.

Climb the 328 steps of Mount Phousi, then gaze out at the city and surrounding hills. The panoramas provide a majestic welcoming to Luang Prabang, and then a vivid evening market provides some excitement on your trip back downhill.

Overnight in Luang Prabang

Day 7. Luang Prabang – Tak Bat [&] full day city tour

Before breakfast we’ll have an optional early morning start to witness and partake in the daily morning ritual of ‘Tak Bat’ or giving alms to the monks. This is a unique ritual still followed by the locals in Luang Prabang and provides some fantastic opportunities for observing an age-old practice. We can also visit the local fresh market to see how the locals shop, before returning to our hotel for breakfast.

Later we’ll visit the quaint Royal Palace Museum, which gives a good overview of the local history. We then begin our temple tour taking in some of the town’s most beautiful structures, including the country’s most historic and enchanting temple, Wat Xiengthong, with its roof sweeping low to the ground, representing the classical Luang Prabang style, as well as the unique Wat Mai, with its five tiered roof and Wat Visoun, known as ‘The Water Melon Stupa’ due to its shape. In the afternoon there’ll be opportunities to visit the excellent Arts and Ethnology Centre, which gives us a great insight into the ethnic mix and culture of Laos.

In addition we’ll also visit the weaving and textile villages of Ban Xangkhong and Ban Xienglek. Our final stop of the day is to climb Mt Phousi, offering a spectacular sunset and panoramic view over Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. The evening is free for personal exploration.

We then drive out of the town where you have the option of stopping to visit Khmu, Hmong and Lao Loum villages, representing the main ethnic groups of Laos. This then takes us to the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfall where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the turquoise pool or walk along the forest trails.

A picnic lunch is taken at the falls. Next to the falls is a Bear Rescue Centre, that does a great job in protecting and rehabilitating the rare Asiatic Black Bear. We then return to Luang Prabang by mid afternoon where the rest of the day is at leisure.
