Laos Mekong River Cruise
Laos Mekong River Cruise
from / to Pakse
Day 1: Pakse- Champassak- Wat Phou (L/D)
Depart from Pakse in the early morning, heading south on a local long tail riverboat. This is the most serene way to travel and your cruise will bring an endless succession of local scenes. Laos life has forever been played out on the riverside; villages are hidden near the shore, fishermen head out in wooden boats, and pristine jungle surrounds your journey.
Enjoy a riverside lunch in Champassak and then tour one of the country’s most impressive sights. Everyone knows of Angkor Wat, but few have heard about Wat Phou, a spectacular temple that dates back to a long time before the famous temples in Cambodia. Moss clings to the stone walls, creepers and roots twirl around the temple, and this UNESCO world heritage site is impressive at every angle.
Before returning to the boat you’ll also take a tour through Champassak, admiring the beautiful colonial architecture and the quaint streets. Return to the boat for a relaxing cruise down-river, enjoying the tropical sunset on the open deck. Dinner is served on board before the boat docks alongside a remote Laotian village.
Overnight on board.
Day 2: Houay Tomo – Oum Muang- Khong Island (B/L/D)
Breakfast is served on board as you cruise towards the cute village of Houay Tomo. Hidden in the jungle behind the village, isolated and lost in the wilderness, is the spectacular temple of Oum Muang. Approaching it feels like something from a Hollywood epic, the trees suddenly rescinding and this dramatic temple standing proud.
Rejoin the boat for lunch and cruise south towards the 4000 Islands, a place where traditional rural life remains unchanged for centuries. You’ll pass countless islands, many of them merely sandbanks, but some of them covered in traditional Laotian Villages. After a stop at Ban Dua Tae village you’ll continue into the broadest part of the Mekong River and dock beside Khong Island.
Enjoy dinner on board. Overnight on board.
Day 3: Khong Island – Khone Phapheng – Pakse (B/L)
Breakfast is served on the deck as you cruise to the charming village of Ban Veuthong. From here the boat cannot go any further and you transfer to a smaller long-tail boat which rides out to Khone Island. Don Det and Don Khone are as laid back as they come, two islands that symbolize both the beauty of the area and the charming simplicity of local life.
Wander to waterfalls and past tiny villages, reveling in the serenity of the 4000 Island area. You’ll return to the mainland for lunch and then take a minivan out to the impressive Khone Phapheng Waterfall. Savor the falls from unique wooden huts and then be transferred north to Pakse, arriving at this quaint town at around 15:00.
