Kong Lor Exploration
Kong Lor Exploration
from / to Vientiane
Day 1: Vientiane – Ban Kong Lor (L)
This morning you will be met by your driver and guide in Vientiane and begin the journey south along route 13. Rural Laos fills the view from the window, each turn revealing a landscape that’s even greener than the last. Winding around the hills you’ll immerse yourself in wonderful panoramas, stopping part way to explore Wat Prabath Phonsane, a beautiful temple that’s named after the footprint of Buddha. Lunch is included and will be taken at a local restaurant.
After three hours you leave the highway, the scenery becoming even more spectacular as you wiggle and wind into the Phou Hin Poun National Protected Area. Limestone karsts rise dramatically from the side of the road, rice paddies stretch out onto the horizon, and rich green forests slowly pass by the window.
Arrive in the cute town of Ban Kong Lor and the rest of the day is at your leisure. The views are spectacular and the peaceful nature of this town is enough to have anyone lulling gently into hibernation. For an amazing local meal check out a very simple restaurant called Kounmee.
Overnight in Ban Kong Lor.
Day 2: Exploring Kong Lor Caves (B, L)
The Kong Lor Caves sound mightily impressive on paper; 7.5 kms long, up to 90 meters wide, and over 100 meters high. But they’re much more impressive when experienced first hand. Enter them on a long tail boat and it’s going to be a very long time before you see daylight again. Shine the spotlights and discover stunning stalactites and stalagmites, before leaving the boat and walking through breathtaking rock formations. Villagers still use this cave as an access route to the villagers on the other side. It’s quite a journey for them, being able to float through a place that is one of Southeast Asia’s most remarkable geological wonders. Deep inside the gloom is an emerald pool, one that reflects the skin color of a Hindi god and has become a sacred site for locals.
Once out on the other side you can stop for refreshments and walk to local villages, experiencing the simple way of life of this untouched part of the world. Your guide will recommend a route based on what you want to see and how long you want to walk. Take some time to relax here, because it really is a tranquil haven that’s surrounded by natural beauty.
Return to Ban Kong Lor the same way the locals would – going downstream through the cave on a long tail boat. In the late afternoon the village is wonderfully photogenic, and you’ll meet dozens of locals as they return from the rice fields and markets, and schools. Tourism hasn’t changed this village and you’re likely to get many welcoming smiles, plenty of children wanting to practice their English, and a wonderful experience of local Laos life.
Day 3: Ban Kong Lor – Vientiane (B)
Enjoy a second morning in the village before you are driven back to Vientiane after breakfast. It’s really recommended to get up early and take a walk through the village, as this is a final chance to see a rural Laos village at its most active and evocative.
After the countryside exploration of the last two days you’ll have the excellent cafes and restaurants in Vientianne to enjoy.
