Itinerary

Day 1: Phnom Penh to Mondulkiri / Sen Monorom (L)

Leave Phnom Penh at around 7:00 in the morning for your eight hour trip to the Mondulkiri Province. The place is located in far east of the country and you will have several stops along the way. Your travel will be made more interesting as you the time passes by because of the lush greenery contrasted with the fertile red soil. You will pass by agricultural lands planted with durian trees, cassava, pepper, rubber. You will also drop by pepper and rubber plantation to learn about how raw materials are gathered.

A local restaurant will be your lunch venue before you proceed with your trip. Upon arrival at Sen Monorom, you will be brought directly to your hotel to check in.

The indigenous tribe of Phnong calls Mondulkiri home. This group of people speaks a unique language which has no written version. Although Khmer language is now being spoken in many parts of the country, elders of the village only know the Phnong language. Little has changed in this little part of the world in spite of the ongoing modernization of the country. Aside from its unique people, Mondulkiri also boasts of its astounding hills, variety of bird species, and elephants.

In the afternoon, take a breather at the province’s picturesque waterfalls, Sen Monorom. You can take a refreshing swim at the natural pool below the falls or just sit and enjoy the scenery. The waterfalls is normally about eight meters high and a few meters wide. Rainy season is the best time to visit the place as cascades can be found in different spots.

Day 2: Sen Monorom – Phulung – Sen Monorom (B,L)

Enjoy your breakfast while you prepare for an exciting tour this day that includes an eight-kilometer trek.

Your adventure will begin at the indigenous Phnong community of Pulung. Your local guide will provide you with an overview of the tribe’s way of life and culture. You may also have a chance to see the inside of a thatch-roof home or some wooden houses. Normally, Cambodian houses are stilted as a flood counter-measure, but more of the newly-built houses sit on the ground.

The Phnongs are known for their affinity to nature and wildlife, especially the elephant. You might be able to see some of these creatures roaming around villages. However, preservationist discourage human and elephant interaction because of it disrupts the natural way of life the animal. They are even subjected to inhuman treatment.

From Pulung, take a moderate eight-kilometer hike across the valley and hills to the main road. From there, you will travel for about 30 minutes to reach Bou Sra Waterfalls. This scenic waterfalls is so astounding because it of its two levels and it is considered as the largest of its kind in Cambodia. The first falls is about 10 meters high and the second cascades at a height of about 25 meters. The second drop is popular among local tourists and some foreigners. If access permits, you can climb up to the first level of the falls. Lunch will be served at this site.

After the break, you will drive back to a coffee plantation for a brief tour and a cup of coffee. Last destination before you hit Sen Monorom is a hilltop to get a view of what the locals call as “Sea Forest”. You will be astounded by the magnificent view of the rolling hills that resemble waves in the ocean. You’ll spend the rest of your time here before heading back to your hotel by sunset.

Day 3: Mondulkiri (B,L)

ELIE or the Elephant Valley Project is your destination for this day. This ecotourism site is situated about 30 minutes away from Sen Monorom. The project is listed as an NGO and provides a different approach to caring of elephants through conservation and rehabilitation. The focus of the group is to allow these animals to roam freely in their natural habitat with very minimal human intervention.

After a briefing, you will be led to a trail where you can observe the elephants go about their daily lives. A number of the elephants at ELIE’s care were rescued from maltreatment of enterprises involved in the tourist industry of the country. Some came from Phnong villages where they were not taken care of enough.

Lunch will be served at the site and it will be followed by more elephant viewing tour in another site. You will learn more about the business of caring for these animals and how important it is to leave them in their natural state, rather than bringing them into human environment for entertainment purposes. Aside from elephant-watching, you can also enjoy trekking the small hills and streams of the site.

ELIE accepts guest from Monday to Friday. Weekends are reserved for elephant grazing far from the prying eyes of humans. You may also choose to volunteer as a part-time worker during your stay, but you need signify your intention at least one month prior to your arrival. Volunteer slots are often reserved for those who could stay long term.

At the end of the day, head back to Mondulkiri where you will spend the remainder of the day at your own leisure.

Overnight in Sen Monorom.

Day 4: Mondulkiri to Departure (B|L)

Your day commences with a breakfast at your hotel then followed by approximately eight hours of travel to Phnom Penh (or other destination in your travel plan).

Along the way, you will drop by another Phnong village called Putang where you can immerse again into their culture. Your guide will assist you in your interactions with the locals and you also might want to peep into the large jars used by the people to brew traditional rice wine.

The first 200 kilometers of your journey back to Phnom Penh will be pretty much like your first day. You will detour to a rubber factory near the town of Chub to get acquainted with the rubber production processes. Lunch will be at a local restaurant along the way to Kampong Cham.

Travel will commence after lunch with an option to pass by Skuon market. You may want to challenge yourself with a local snack sold in buses and stops. Called ch’ngain, this tasty treat is actually a spider that is dug up from burrows in the countryside. You are expected to arrive at Phnom Penh by late afternoon.
