Archeological Laos Tour
Archeological Laos Tour
from / to Phonsavan
Day 1: Xieng Khuang Arrival
Arrive in Xieng Khuang where your guide and private car will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Xieng Khuang was completely destroyed during the “secret war,” thousands of American bombs decimating the land as Laos ended up entangled in the Vietnam war. It’s the gateway town to the Plain of Jars but today starts with an insight into its war history.
You’ll enjoy a guided tour of the city before visiting the MAG Center, a humanitarian organization that’s still clearing the remnants of the conflict. It will provide a thought provoking narrative about a very unknown part of the US Vietnam war.
Overnight in Xieng Khuang
Day 2: Xieng Khuang – Plain of Jars (B/L)
In the morning you will journey through Phonsavan and the Plain of Jars, a mysterious archaeological complex that is one of the most remarkable sites in Asia. 2000 year old stone jars litter the landscape, enigmatic shapes carved into boulders and standing lonely on the ground. Some are 70cms high, but others rise up to four meters high. Don’t worry if you’re confused at their appearance. Their true origins and meanings continue to be a mystery.
Your guide will provide the competing theories and then you can make up your own mind. There are literally hundreds of these jars and you’ll visit three different sites; Thong Hai Hin, Hai Hin on Phou Salator, and Hai Hin Lat Khai. Local villages also punctuate the landscape so you’ll be surrounded by authentic Lao scenes throughout the tour. This area was heavily bombed during the war and unexploded landmines and bombs remain in the vicinity. It’s essential that you stick to the marked paths.
You’ll pass through areas that were important battlefields during the American secret war and it’s still possible to see the bomb craters. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Phonsavan. In the afternoon you’ll take a trip to Muang Khoun. an old provincial capital that somehow destroyed the bombings. Visit old pagodas that lay in ruins, cast your eyes on the immense columns of Wat Pia Wat, and then marvel at an ancient 30 meter stupa from the Lan Xang/ Lanna period. Few tourists visit this part of Laos yet it contains some of the country’s most impressive highlights.
The temples of this afternoon would be covered in tourists if they were in Luang Prabang. You’ll probably have them all to yourself. Return to Xieng Khuang in late afternoon. Overnight in Xieng Khouang.
Day 3: Xieng Khuang Departure (B)
After breakfast you have free time before being transferred to the airport to fly on to your next destination.
