Itinerary

Day 1:  Bhamo  (D )

Embark the Amara River Cruise in the afternoon.

Day 2:  Bhamo – Shwegu  ( B, L, D )

Set sail at 06:00 am. On the way, pass the beautiful Second Defile. The river banks become a steep cliff and the river bottom drops away to extreme depths. The river scene is amazing and offers beautiful scenery. Arrive in Shwegu in the afternoon and visit the pagodas of Shwe Baw Kyunn on the opposite river bank of Shwegu, where the Amara will stop overnight.

Day 3: Shwegu – Katha  (B, L, D )

Leave Shwegu in the morning at 06:00 am. The scenery along the river is beautiful with small villages and dense tropical forest. This day is a good chance to see the famous Ayeyarwaddy Dolphin, quite common in this area. In the afternoon, we will reach Katha, a beautiful town with an interesting market, friendly people, and a unique atmosphere. Katha is known from the book “Burmese Days” written by George Orwell. Dinner and overnight on board the Amara.

Day 4:  Katha – Tagaung  (B,L,D )

Set sail at 06:00 am. Your journey will continue downstream until Tagaung, one of the oldest capitals of Myanmar. Proceed for sightseeing at Tagaung. Overnight and dinner on board the Amara just south of Tagaung.

Day 5:   Tagaung – Kyaukmyaung   (B,L,D )

Set sail at 06:00 am. You will continue to Thabeikkyin. Then, pass the Third Defile. This area is covered with dense teak forest. Sail downstream till Nwe Nyein (pottery village) and explore around New Nyein. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 6:  Kyaukmyaung – Mingun   (B,L,D )

Set sail at 06:00 am downstream to Mingun. You will reach the Mingun in the afternoon. Visit the world’s gigantic bell, “Mingun Bell”. The Bell weighs 90 tones and is the largest hanging undamaged bell in the world. Then, visit Shin Phyume Pagoda, and the unfinished Mingun Pagoda or the “Mingun Pahtodawgyi” a colossal brick monument, the ruins are the remains of a massive construction project begun by King Bodawpaya in 1790 which was intentionally left unfinished. Dinner and overnight on board the Amara near Mingun.

Day 7:   Mingun – Mandalay  Jetty    (B)

Set sailing down to Mandalay.  Disembark Mandalay Jetty at 08:00 am.

Due to the early start on the first day, travelers are strongly recommended to book overnight accommodation for the night before the tour begins
This boat trip has been designed with the feel of an expedition in mind and explores parts of Myanmar that are as yet undeveloped. Travelers should therefore be prepared that the itinerary may, on occasion, have to be altered at short notice to adapt to changing circumstances.
Minimum number of travelers for the Amara cruise: if the number of cabins booked is 3 or fewer, the operator of the ship reserves the right to cancel the cruise with a 50-day period of notice. If this happens, we will contact booked travelers to discuss an alternative arrangement.
Special cancellation policy for the Amara cruise:
90 – 61 Days prior to departure :   25 % of the payment
60 – 31 Days prior to departure :   50 % of the payment
30 – 22 Days prior to departure :   75 % of the payment
21 Days prior to departure     :   100 %

About the Ship

The “Amara” is a traditional and comfortably furnished ship that guarantees its passengers a stylish and romantic stay on board. Built from teakwood, this eight-meter-wide river cruiser has a draft of just one meter, making it capable of sailing northwards up the Ayeyarwady towards Bhamo.
The cabins onboard the ship are comfortable and furnished with en-suite showers/WCs. Also located on board – and designed with optimal levels of style, comfort and coziness in mind – are recreation rooms, an inviting bar and a generously-proportioned sun deck. 24-hour power supply is guaranteed by a generator and battery backup, while smoke detectors in all cabins, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, lifejackets and a lifeboat ensure complete peace of mind with regards to safety. On-board services include laundry facilities and a fully-equipped kitchen. The friendly, helpful crew is well placed to anticipate and see to passenger wishes.
AMARA I
Built between 2002 and 2003, this charming teakwood ship is 30 metres long and offers space for a maximum of 14 persons in seven double cabins. The six standard cabins and one deluxe cabin in the front part of the ship are furnished with en-suite showers and WCs. Mosquito nets are available in all cabins; however, there are no air conditioning units or fans. The atmosphere on board the ship is practically one of family – a 12-man crew is available round the clock to see to passengers’ needs. Shared mealtimes take place either on board or on a sandbank in accordance with the itinerary. The sun deck offers passengers a space to relax and take in the magnificent landscape as the ship passes by.
AMARA II
Built between 2007 and 2009, this charming teakwood ship is 35 metres long and offers space for a maximum of 10 persons in five double cabins, all of which are furnished with en-suite showers and WCs. Mosquito nets are available in all cabins; however, there are no air conditioning units or fans. The atmosphere on board the ship is practically one of family – a 12-man crew is available round the clock to see to passengers’ needs. Shared mealtimes take place either on board or on a sandbank in accordance with the itinerary. The sun deck offers passengers a space to relax and take in the magnificent landscape as the ship passes by.
