Itinerary

Day 1: Siem Reap to Battambang (—)

Take a scenic route of the Cambodian countryside aboard a private vehicle from Siem Reap to Battambang. The travel time is approximately three hours to your hotel for your check in. Your afternoon will be spent in Phnom Sampov. The name is directly translated as “Ship Hill” due to its distinct formation, this land mass is among the few hills protruding in this flat landscape. A top the hill is a small temple where you can see the view of the whole plain of sugar palm trees and rice fields below.

The infamous killing caves found in the hill is a reminder of Cambodia’s bitter history. The contrast of the serenity of the place and the brutality of the past makes an interesting combination. You will stay at this play till the sun sets in the horizon to witness another natural spectacle. As night falls, millions of bats will emerge from the caves and fly in patterns across the night sky. You will drive back to Battambang where you will spend the night.

Overnight in Battambang.

Day 2: Battambang (B,L)

Battambang town is known for its rice which is considered the best in Cambodia. This countryside town rests on the Sanger River which snakes through the whole province. It serves as the connection between the Cardamom Mountain and the Tonle Sap Lake and provides irrigation for the rice fields along its path.

Your morning will be spent on walk-Local boat-bike tour along the Sangke River to give you a foretaste of the Battambang rural life. You will also be treated to a serene moment with monks and an interesting talk about the town’s rich artistic and design history.

Through a brief film showing, you will share Battambang’s history as it was transferred back and forth between Thailand and Cambodia. You will also have a view of 20th century French colonial architecture in its many buildings. These remnants of the past are considered as the most-preserved colonial heritage in the country. Battambang escapade is not complete without trying its local coffee at Psar Nath, the town’s main market. After which, you will take a local boat ride to go to the other side of the river and visit Wat Povil Temple.

Take time to observe the monks in this temple as they go about their rituals which depend on their worship calendar. You may even have the opportunity to share a local boat ride with them in the morning when they go to town to collect alms. After you cross the river back to town, you will hop on a bike and begin your tour on wheels at the celebrated 2.5 Street. Your journey will also take you to a Thai Temple on your way to a small market where you can have another cup of coffee or a glass of sugarcane juice. After your brief respite, continue biking towards Wat Kor Village where you will see century-old Khmer heritage houses.

Continue touring the riverbanks on your bike and cross a suspension-bridge specifically designed for bicycles and motorbikes. Before you hit town, you will again be treated to another drink. You will be back at Battambang town at around 12:45 PM. Lunch will be served at Fresh Eats Café. This eatery is managed by a non-government organization that takes care of orphans, street children, and kids who are victim of child-trafficking. It provides the young ones with education, vocational training, and most importantly a secure family environment to help them regain their normal part in the society. After lunch, hop on a car and go on a tour of villages near Battambang.

You will be introduced to locally-produced products like rice paper, the Cambodian fish paste called prahoc, and the sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes known locally as grohan. Immediately after, you will take a different kind of riding adventure aboard the Bamboo Train. This is uniquely Cambodian as the locals improvised a method to transport themselves to Phnom Penh using the old train tracks.

Experience the thrill of a rollercoaster ride sans the loops! (Note: The railway connecting Battambang and Phnom Penh is currently under reconstruction and this part of the tour is not guaranteed. In the event that it will be discontinued, an alternate sightseeing tour will be put in place.)

The evening is reserved for a night of music, visual, and performing arts at Phare Ponleu Selpak. This school of the arts has a unique and touching story of providing education, entertainment, and support to underprivileged communities. The humanitarian effort of the school has helped in fostering warmth and creativity while uplifting the morale of the people in spite of their difficulties. Truly, a must-see attraction when in Battambang!

Overnight in Battambang.

Note: The Battambang Bike

The tour mentioned above was designed by a Battambang bike rental group called Jam. Organized by a Canadian who loves both cycling and architecture, the rental company offers other tour options such as photography adventure or architectural tours. All tours in their package have a fixed bicycle rental price regardless of the time you spend on the tour. This is their way of encouraging the locals to put value in their history and city. In the long run, the owner aims to pass on the ownership of the establishment to a Cambodian to ensure sustainability and structure of the business.

Day 3: Battambang to Siem Reap and Departure (B,L)

Leave Battambang after your breakfast for a two-hour ride to Banteay Chhmar. This place is not frequented by tourists, but has a truly extraordinary ambiance. Banteay Chhmar was erected during the reign of Jayavarman VII. It is considered as one of the most magnificent ancient Khmer structure not belonging to the Siem Reap complex and is currently a candidate to get the UNESCO World Heritage Site distinction.

Witness how nature works its ways in the stones of the ruins which is currently being reconstructed. Along with a local guide, walk on top of the ruins, marvel at its vegetation-covered walls, and snap photos of its Bayon-like towers.

A simple yet filling lunch waits for you at the local community center.
